Book - The Hillyars and the Burtons : a story of two families - Colonial Australian Popular Fiction

It was published in book-form in Covering the period , the novel tells the tale of the shifting fortunes and interwoven lives of the wealthy Hillyar family and the working-class Burtons. More than half of this book is set outside of Australia, primarily Chelsea in London and the rural estate of Stanlake. The remainder takes place in the Australian colony of Victoria, although great liberties are taken by the author in regards to geographical accuracy. The overall effect is that it is quite difficult to pin-point exactly where in Victoria the setting is meant to be.

Some place names and events e. I loved the humorous narrative style, the strong characterisation and the enchanting use of regional vernacular Londoner, English gentry and colonial Australian alike. The characters are warm, flawed and immensely likeable — even the villains and silly-headed idiots. The story weaves from Australia to England, from England to Australia, and is utterly engaging.

I understand that the somewhat antiquated style of prose and language used may be off-putting to some readers, but it is also what makes this book so beautiful and important.
